Rumsfeld Foundation Hosts 2024 Spring Retreat for Graduate Fellowship Program

Washington, D.C. – On Saturday, May 4th the Rumsfeld Foundation convened members of its Graduate Fellowship Network for the Foundation’s annual Spring Retreat in Annapolis, Maryland.

Throughout the day, participants heard from a guest speaker and several accomplished professionals from within the Fellowship Network, as well as connected directly with network members in their respective fields before enjoying the historic setting of downtown Annapolis later that evening. Discussions focused on a range of topics including career guidance across the private and public sectors, entrepreneurship, leadership and the future of U.S. diplomacy.

Retreat programming commenced with a panel of three network members who reflected on their various career paths in economics, technology and national security and offered advice on mentorship, leadership and career development. After a brief networking interlude, participants then heard from another network member and representative of the program’s Alumni Leadership Council who discussed her experience founding and leading a new generative AI-focused company.

Network Perspectives Panel

After a sector-based networking lunch, formal programming continued with an engaging conversation with Ambassador Stuart Holliday, CEO of Meridian International Center and former U.S. Ambassador for Special Political Affairs at the UN. Attendees had the opportunity to hear his insights on the tools needed for America’s public and private sector leaders to tackle future foreign policy challenges and important lessons from his experience working in the White House, including interactions with Secretary Rumsfeld. To conclude, Dr. Steve Cambone, Foundation Board Member, offered some key takeaways from the day’s discussions. Rounding out the evening, attendees enjoyed refreshments at a historic pub before a waterfront dinner overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

Since 2008, the Rumsfeld Foundation has provided a total of more than $4 million in Fellowship grants to over 200 graduate scholars who are dedicated to public service-oriented careers.
